Steve’s father was killed in action in WWI before he was born. His mother worked herself ragged to provide for herself and her ailing son, even when she was suffering from TB.

It was because of this that he never consummated his love with Peggy while he could. He didn’t want to risk having a child and then not be there for him, he couldn’t bear the though of Peggy and their child suffering as he and his mother had.
